Many people who go for Umrah bring back Musallahs with the person’s name as gifts. Would it be okay to perform Salaah on those Musallahs? – I heard that it is not good to put names on Musallahs…

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullahi wa-barakatuh.
It is disliked to use or spread a prayer mat (Musalla) or rug that has phrases or letters woven into it. Sitting on such a mat is discouraged. This dislike remains even if the letters are separated or partially removed, as individual letters still hold respect. Prayer mats should ideally be simple to maintain focus and humility during Salah.
Adding decorative designs or inscribing names—whether of oneself or a loved one—on the prayer mat is discouraged in Shari’ah, as it can distract from the concentration needed during prayer and may be disrespectful to the letters and words. Furthermore, names written on the mat may sometimes be stepped on, which is considered disrespectful, especially if the names or attributes of Allah are inscribed.
It is therefore better to avoid embellishing prayer mats or inscribing names on them. While Salah performed on such mats remains valid, simplicity helps preserve the sanctity and focus of the Salah. [1]

وَفِي الْخَانِيَّةِ: بِسَاطٌ أَوْ مُصَلَّى كُتِبَ عَلَيْهِ فِي النَّسْجِ الْمُلْكُ لِلَّهِ يُكْرَهُ اسْتِعْمَالُهُ وَبَسْطُهُ، وَالْقُعُودُ عَلَيْهِ، وَلَوْ قَطَعَ الْحَرْفَ مِنْ الْحَرْفِ أَوْ خَيَّطَ عَلَى بَعْضِ الْحُرُوفِ: حَتَّى لَمْ تَبْقَ الْكَلِمَةُ مُتَّصِلَةً لَا تَزُولُ الْكَرَاهَةُ لِأَنَّ لِلْحُرُوفِ الْمُفْرَدَةِ حُرْمَةً وَكَذَا لَوْ كَانَ عَلَيْهَا الْمُلْكُ أَوْ الْأَلِفُ وَحْدَهَا أَوْ اللَّامُ اهـ

بساط أو مصلى كتب عليه في النسج الملك لله يكره بسطه، والقعود عليه واستعماله، فلو قطع حرف من حروفه وخيط على بعض الحروف حتى لم تبق الكلمة متصلة لا تسقط الكراهة؛ لأنه بقيت الحروف، وللحروف المفردة حرمة؛ لأن نظم القرآن وأخبار النبي عليه السلام بواسطة هذه الحروف، وقد روي أن واحداً من الأئمة رأى الشبان يرمون، وقد كان المكتوب على الهدف: أبو جهل لعنه الله، فمنعهم عن ذلك، ومضى بوجهه، ثم رجع، فوجدهم محوا اسم الله وكانوا يرمون كذلك، فقال: إنما أمنعكم لأجل الحروف.
