Dog Bakery

Question:

Alsalamualaikum. I have just started a business that is related to dogs, and I am worried that it may be impermissible in Islam.

In short, the core activity of the business is making treats (not meals) for dogs. The difference between my business and traditional dog food manufacturers is that the treats that I make are freshly baked,

and I market my company as a bakery for dogs, a shop in which people would come to spoil their dogs with treats that are pricey. For instance one of our main targets are people who consider their dogs as a part of their family.

The reason I started a business like this is because it is an established model with a lot of demand and not enough supply in the country I live in.

Answer:

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

We commend you on your sensitivity of earning a Halal income. This stems from the consciousness of your Imaan.

Nabi ﷺ said:

طَلَبُ كَسْبِ الْحَلَالِ فَرِيضَةٌ بَعْدَ الْفَرِيضَةِ

Translation: Earning of Halal income is an obligation beyond other obligations.

(Shuabul Imaan, Baihaqi)

It is permissible to run the business in reference as long as it does not involve any impermissible ingredients. The income derived will be Halal. [i]
